Danes Embrace IT

There are more Danes online than ever before and the gender and generational gaps have reduced even further. In the 60-74 age group in particular, 65 percent use the internet, compared to 54 percent in 2008.

The latest figures from Statistics Denmark show a significant progress in internet usage by Danes. Figures for 2010 show that 88 percent of Danes have been online within the latest three month period, compared to 86 percent in 2009 and 84 percent in 2008.

The positive development is largely aided by the older generation – of which 65 percent use the internet, compared to 54 percent two years ago.

Progress among female users has been so great that the figures for the latest three month period show that there is now not much of a gender gap between internet users.

Danes are using their computers to a greater extent to write emails and avail of internet banking. Since 2008, the number of internet banking users has increased by 10 percentage points, meaning 71 percent of Danes are now signed up. In the same period, the number of those using the internet to send emails has increased from 76 percent in 2008 to 83 percent in 2010.

Finally, the number of Danes using the internet to send information to public authorities has also increased from 33 percent in 2009 to 50 percent in 2010.

– The latest figures on Danes' use of the internet and IT proficiency show that Danes are really becoming digital. In particular, I think it is wonderful to see groups who previously have used the internet to a relatively small extent, but are now seriously taking the digital world to heart, says Science Minister Charlotte Sahl-Madsen.
