A Quarter of Danes Already Have Access to Broadband Connections of the Future
Denmark is well on its way to achieving its target of making a broadband connection of at least 100 Mbps available to all. Already, 25 percent of all households and companies can avail of 100 Mbps or more. But despite the opportunities available, only few Danes are making use of faster broadband.
– Denmark is already well on its way to becoming a high-speed society. But to achieve the government's target, we must both focus on increasing supply and demand of high-speed broadband. Therefore, as part of the "Digital Roads to Growth" programme I have launched a large number of initiatives to meet this target, says Science Minister Charlotte Sahl-Madsen.
Twenty-five percent of Danes currently have the possibility to gain access to at least 100 Mbps, which the government is aiming to make available to all Danes by 2020. Uptake is especially positive in South and Mid-Jutland, according to the latest edition of the National IT and Telecom Agency's Broadband Survey.
For now, only fibre-optic and fibre-based LAN connections provide at least 100 Mbps. It is expected that other technologies will be able to offer similar speeds in the coming years.
More Danes have the opportunity to avail of faster broadband connections than are being currently sought. Most Danes typically look for a speed between 4 and 10 Mbps. A total of 92 percent of Danes have the possibility to gain access to 10 Mbps today, while 99 percent can get a 2 Mbps broadband connection.
The broadband survey shows that 74 percent of Danes have the possibility to gain access to 30 Mbps and 86 percent have access to 50 Mbps – such speeds are far greater than the demand from customers.
– Many Danes have the opportunity to avail of faster broadband than they are currently buying. Clearly broadband speeds are not the only decisive factor. Service content on the internet and the competencies of the public are just as important if we are to utilise the many opportunities of the internet, says Charlotte Sahl-Madsen.
