OECD Meeting on ICT and the Environment in Copenhagen

On 22-23 May OECD and the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation will bring international focus on ICT and the Environment.

On 22-23 May 2008 the OECD and the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation will bring international focus on ICT and the Environment. 100 experts and representatives from the OECD countries will discuss the potential of information and communication technologies in relation to CO2 reduction and other environmental targets at "Eigtveds Pakhus", Copenhagen.

– International cooperation is a necessity to handle climate-related problems and other environmental challenges, says Helge Sander, Danish Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation.

At the OECD Meeting, the experts will focus on how ICT can be used for energy management and other intelligent solutions within the environmental area. In addition, the Meeting will discuss what can be done to promote more environment-friendly ICT products.

Helge Sander announced the National Action Plan for Green ICT on 14 April 2008. The Action Plan introduces a number of initiatives, which will be implemented before the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen in December 2009.

This is the first time the OECD countries meet for specific discussions on ICT and the environment. The intention is that the Organisation should focus on this subject in the next few years – thus contributing to solving the global environmental problems.

– I hope that the Copenhagen Meeting will give the OECD's work on this subject a good start. And, Denmark will certainly consider hosting other international events on ICT and the environment up to the UN Conference next year, says Helge Sander.
