On 25 April 2007, the expedition vessel Vaedderen ("The Ram") arrived at Copenhagen after its more than eight-month voyage with the Galathea 3 expedition round the globe. It was received by the Danes at the Langelinie Quay in Copenhagen.

Vaedderen sailed from Copenhagen on 11 August 2006, and during the voyage it has hosted a variety of first-class groups of researchers from several Danish and certain foreign universities and government research institutes. The projects have included both marine and land-based activities.

The purpose of the expedition is to strengthen Danish research. Not merely by virtue of the individual research projects, but also as a "research showcase" intended to increase awareness of, and interest in, Danish research.

A number of Danish media have followed the expedition closely. Via direct satellite access and a learning portal on the Internet, pupils all over the country have been able to involve the research done on Galathea 3 actively in their lessons.
