Danish Effort to Ensure e-Accessibility is among the Best in Europe

The initiatives taken by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation to ensure better accessibility of public websites have been rated as among the best in Europe in terms of accessibility out of 150 proposals from all over Europe.

The initiatives taken by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation to ensure better accessibility of public websites have been rated as among the best in Europe in terms of accessibility out of 150 proposals from all over Europe.

The selection was announced at a Ministerial Debate on e-Inclusion Policy in Lisbon on 2-3 December.

– This fine score is an important recognition of Denmark's efforts. It is the Government's policy that there should be equal access for all to the knowledge society and its digital services. With effect from next year, public authorities will be under an obligation to make accessible websites, says Science Minister Helge Sander.

The European Commission has launched the European e-Inclusion Initiative, which is behind the selection.

The Danish initiative in the area of accessibility means a strengthening of the efforts undertaken so far, and includes several measures:

  • From 2008, public websites must be designed so as to be accessible to all.
  • The National IT and Telecom Agency will strengthen its present guidance in the area.
  • The National IT and Telecom Agency will test the accessibility of public websites annually and publish the results on the Internet.
