Maritime Training and Education

Maritime training and education in Denmark is under the management and control of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education – Danish Agency for Higher Education and Educational Support.

The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education – Agency for Higher Education and Educational Support –  is responsible for all maritime training and education as well as training ships. For the educations of Ratings and Officers (Deck and Engine), the relevant institutions comprise:

Three Engineering Colleges for Engine Officers:

  • Københavns Maskinmesterskole
  • Aarhus Maskinmesterskole
  • Fredericia Maskinmesterskole

One Maritime and Education Centre for Engine Officers and Able Ratings:

  • Maritime Training and Education Centre (MARTEC)

One Maritime and Education Centre for Ship’s Officers (Single and Dual purpose Deck and Engine Officers):

  • Svendborg International Maritime Academy (SIMAC)

One Nautical College and one Skipper School:

  • Marstal Navigationsskole
  • Skagen Skipperskole

One School and two Sailing Training Vessels for Ordinary Ratings:

  • Svendborg Søfartsskole
  • Skoleskibet DANMARK
  • Skoleskibet Georg Stage

One School for Commercial Fishermen:

  • Fiskeriskolen

Important maritime education issues pass through the Maritime Education Council, the members of which are representatives of ship owners and seafarers associations, lecturers and student organisations, the Royal Danish Navy, the Danish Maritime Authority and the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education. The Maritime Education Council is advisory.

New ministry

3 October 2011: The ministry has been renamed to the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education, and its fields of responsibility have been altered.
